DR054 Dragon #54 Can paladins contract lycanthropy? Will the rotting caused by Demogorgon have an effect on monks of fifth level or higher, since they are immune to disease?  Yes, a paladin can become a lycanthrope. Yes, a high-level monk can be affected by Demogorgon’s rot-disease attack. The immunity to disease that is enjoyed by paladins and by monks of fifth level or higher applies only to “natural” diseases, such as those listed in the table on page 14 of the DMG, and not to “unnatural” diseases such as those caused by the attack or touch of a monster. The same thing goes for the rotting disease transmitted by a mummy or the “disease” caused by the spread of green slime, for instance.
DR129 Dragon #129 Can PC magic-users or elves add spells that they find into their spell books?  Yes, PC magic-users and elves can copy spells from scrolls or “captured” spell books into their own spell books. In either case, the copied spell disappears from its original scroll or book when it is copied into the PC’s book. The DM can impose time or money requirements on copying spells into books. The section on destroyed spell books (Expert Rulebook, page 26) is a good guide.
DR078 Dragon #78 Can psionic creatures or persons sense the presence of other psionic beings? If so, at what range does this ability function?  According to the DMG (p. 182), it is apparent that the use of any psionic talent or attack/defense mode will attract the notice of other psionic beings in the vicinity. The attracted creatures will not instinctively sense the nature of the power(s) being employed, or exactly how powerful (psionically) the “source” of the power is, but they will be aware of the general direction from which the psionic emanations came and will be able, for short periods of time, to track accurately back in the direction of the other psionic character or creature. This “tracking back” can be done for as long as a turn (10 minutes) if a true psionic talent was used, or for a round (1 minute) if the energy came from a magical effect that resembles a psionic power. The range of this ability, which is innate and common to all psionic characters and creatures, is 1” (30 feet) per level or hit die of the detecting creature; certain monsters (su monsters and gray ooze, for example) are able to detect psionics-users at distances greater than normal, but these are exceptions. Note that a psionic character or creature not expending psionic strength points cannot be detected at that time. Also, a being using mind bar or the discipline of invisibility cannot be detected while employing those skills. To a limited extent, psionic characters and creatures (particularly those with a high psionic ability score and those with the sensitivity to psychic impressions discipline) can judge how great an amount of psionic strength points were being used by the detected being at the moment of detection, but this assessment will be very rough, and is not necessarily a good clue to how psionically powerful the detected being is.
DR126 Dragon #126 Can the DM also play in a roleplaying game?  DMs should not be players in their own campaigns; they are supposed to be neutral and disinterested people who control the action, resolve conflicts fairly, and try to make sure that everyone has a good time. The DM may control NPCs who join a party and act like PCs, but this is not the same as playing. When playing in someone else’s campaign, a DM is just another player; he has no special rights or privileges.
DR117 Dragon #117 Can the illusionist cantrip rainbow be used as a material component for the 5th-level cleric spell rainbow?  Yes. The cantrip creates a shimmering band of light which exactly duplicates a rainbow, and the cleric spell specifies only that the caster must be within sight of a rainbow of any sort. There is no reason why the two dweomers should not be able to work in conjunction.
DR078 Dragon #78 Can the psionic discipline animal telepathy be used to communicate with humans? After all, humans are animals.  Nice try, but no go. The word “animal” in this use should be interpreted the same as for spells like speak with animals and animal friendship — that is, animals are “basically normal, nonfantastic creatures such as apes, bears, cats, dogs, elephants, and so on” (Players Handbook, p. 46, speak with animals description). They are “of at least animal intelligence but not above semi-intelligent rating” (p. 54, animal friendship description). Generally, any sentient creature with a measurable intelligence score of 4 or lower can be affected by animal telepathy — and at extremely high levels of mastery, even communication with intelligent plants is possible. Although some humanoids could qualify under this “4 or lower” definition, the term “animal” in this usage does not encompass humans or humanoids.
DR035 Dragon #35 Can Thieves be chaotic good? I have three players who are, and we are wondering if they will have to make an alignment change. We are also wondering whether or not this alignment change is considered voluntary on their part? If it is, will I have to make them drop a level?  Thieves can be neutral or evil, but not good. In this situation, I don’t think you should force them to make an alignment change. Just have them become their new alignments as if they have always been of that alignment This way they won’t be penalized for not reading their Players Handbook, but the next time they don’t read the book, don’t show them any mercy—unless, of course, you goofed too.
DR035 Dragon #35 Can you shoot arrows at someone attacking you in hand-to-hand combat?  No.
DR131 Dragon #131 Certain monsters have no listed hit dice, only a fixed number of hit points. How do you figure out their effective hit dice for things like saving throws and combat ability?  Unless the creature?s description states otherwise, divide total hit points by 4.5 to get hit dice.
DR079 Dragon #79 Concerning “Evil Dragon Armors” (issue #62): Can someone make shields from dragon hide with special powers? Why are the armor classes of the dragon armors so low? What special powers would suits made from other sorts of evil dragons (e.g., yellow, orange, purple, chromatic) have?  Much of this would be up to the DM to arbitrate. A shield made of dragon hide might give a bonus to the saving throw of the user against the breath weapon of the dragon-type the shield is made from, if the shield was properly enchanted. Such a shield would otherwise be like any other type of magic shield, benefitting the user’s armor class. Only one or two shields at most could be made from any single dragon hide, under the same restrictions as mentioned in the original article. The AC of the dragon armors is low because live dragons have thick layers of fat and muscle beneath their scaled hides, which adds to their AC. Armors made from other types of evil dragons can be created by interested players and referees, within the restrictions of the original article; the powers that such armors would possess are up to the DM to decide.
