360. | DR052 | Dragon #52 | How long do the paralyzing effects of a glyph of warding (peh)
last? | | That’s up to the DM. (If you want a recommendation from the
sage, try 1-6 turns.) There are no details in the AD&D game rules
on exactly which glyphs should be employed in a campaign or
what their characteristics should be. The glyph of paralysis
(peh) which is illustrated on page 41 of the DMG, along with
some others, is meant as an example of how a glyph might appear and what its general function might be. Other suggestions
for “typical glyphs” are found in the spell description in the
Players Handbook, but players and DMs must take it from there,
formulating all the specific rules governing how severe and how
long-lasting the effects of a glyph are. |
361. | DR129 | Dragon #129 | How long does a character who
drinks a potion of gaseous form stay
in gaseous form? | | The character remains gaseous as long
as the potion lasts; a potion of gaseous
form has the standard potion duration
7-12 turns, or 70-120 seconds. |
362. | DR037 | Dragon #37 | How long does the paralysis caused by a carrion
crawler, ghast or ghoul last? | | I have always assumed it to be 24 hours. However, since
the duration of the paralysis is not clearly defined in any of the
books, I suggest that each DM decide the duration in his particular
campaign. |
363. | DR129 | Dragon #129 | How long is a melee round? Exactly
how many times can a character
or creature attack during a
melee round? | | D&D game melee round is 10 seconds
long. A creature gets the number of attacks
listed in the “Attacks” row in its
description each round. A character may
make one attack or cast one spell each
round (except for high-level fighters and
demi-humans, as per the Companion Set). |
364. | DR126 | Dragon #126 | How long, in real time, does it take
for a character to reach 9th level? | | The answer to this one depends on how
often you play, with whom you play, and
whether or not you are really following
the rules. In some Lake Geneva campaigns,
it would take you about a year to reach
9th level if you played the same character
once or twice a week. |
365. | DR129 | Dragon #129 | How many charges does a rod
have? | | Rods in the D&D game are permanently
enchanted items, unless the rod’s description
states otherwise. They don’t use
charges. |
366. | DR131 | Dragon #131 | How many eggs do dragons lay in
a single clutch? How much time
passes between the laying of
clutches? | | This is not difficult to determine from
information given on page 30 of the Monster
Manual. Since any group of two or
more dragons is a mated pair with young,
the maximum number of eggs in a clutch
is the maximum number of dragons appearing,
minus two. Since most dragons
appear in groups of one to four, most
dragons lay one or two eggs. Faerie
dragons, which appear in groups of up to
six, lay up to four eggs. The minimum
number of eggs laid is one. If one assumes
that young dragons stay with their parents
at least until they reach the subadult stage
at 16 years, each clutch must be at least 16
years apart, since dragons would be found
in larger groups if they laid eggs while
rearing young. |
367. | DR129 | Dragon #129 | How many experience points are
normal and giant rats worth? | | A normal rat has an experience-point
value of 1; a giant rat has an experiencepoint
value of 6. |
368. | DR129 | Dragon #129 | How many hit points does a character
regain when he eats his
rations? | | None. Characters have to eat to stay
alive. Food provides sustenance but does
not heal wounds. |
369. | DR126 | Dragon #126 | How many points of strength or
constitution will a PC gain if he
spends nonadventuring time
exercising? | | Officially, none. All character classes are
assumed to exercise to a degree appropriate
to their professions. The less-physical
classes fill in their nonadventuring time
with study and mental exercises. Note that
the cavalier class, as given in Unearthed
Arcana, can improve some of its characteristics
over time. |
