 671DR053 Dragon #53 Will a monk’s open hand attack affect creatures which can be hit only by magical weapons?  The sage says no. It doesn’t specifically say in the rules that a monk can hit in this fashion, so the only possible ruling to make is that a monk cannot. As soon as we start giving characters and creatures attributes that aren’t specifically prohibited to them, the ruination of the campaign is not far behind. There is some justification for this ruling to be found in the way certain other rules are worded. The PH does specifically say that a monk can’t use his special dodging ability on magical missiles, and that the quivering palm — “perhaps the most terrible power” a monk has (in the words of the Players Handbook), is not usable against creatures which are only vulnerable to magic weapons. In that light, there is no rationale for allowing an open hand attack, certainly not as “terrible” a power, to be useful in the same circumstances. The Dungeon Masters Guide sums it up with the statement, “...monks are not supermen or superwomen.” Monks have a number of special abilities which set them apart — but not that far apart. 
 672DR131 Dragon #131 Will a monster join a character party if invited?  Possibly, if its reaction is favorable and it has something to gain from joining the party. An evil monster might join in order to get an opportunity to turn on a party unexpectedly. 
 673DR031 Dragon #31 Will the new attack matrix (armor class system) in the DUNGEON MASTERS GUIDE work with the MONSTER MANUAL?  Yes, it will. All D&D material that says ADVANCED DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS is meant to be used together. You will have no trouble playing the monsters with the attack tables found in the DMG.

 676DR034 Dragon #34 Will you answer questions about Boot Hill, Divine Right, Gamma World, etc.?  No, not on my own time. I don’t play those games much. I have, but I prefer Q&D/AD&D. To have any questions in those areas answered, you will have to write to TSR and then they will see that the correct person answers your letter. 
 677DR047 Dragon #47 With regard to weapon type “to hit” adjustments, does the table on page 38 of the Players Handbook refer to armor types without shields? If the opponent was wearing chain and shield should we refer to column 5 (scale mail + shield/chain mail) or column 4 (chain mail + shield/splint mail/banded mail)?  Chain mail by itself is AC 5; with shield it is AC 4. The problem lies with determining what the “/” marks on the Armor Class Table (PH, page 36) mean. Each mark separates a specific type of combination of armor which shares the same AC rating with the others grouped with it. A shield, when one is conjunction with the type of armor which precedes it, not the type which comes after the “/“. 
 678DR079 Dragon #79 With regards to AD&D module S3, Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, would a shield spell stop a laser shot?  No; the shield would have no effect. 
 679DR034 Dragon #34 Would a Periapt of Wound Closure heal or allow the healing of damage caused by a Sword of Wounding?  No. Only time and rest or a Wish will heal a wound caused by a Sword of Wounding. 
 680DR079 Dragon #79 Would blasters or lasers from GAMMA WORLD adventures be able to harm creatures only affected by magical weapons, such as gargoyles?  Yes; such energy attacks would harm nearly all AD&D monsters or characters. Use the “Mutants & Magic” section of the DMG to arbitrate details of such combat.
