370. | DR046 | Dragon #46 | Do Clerics with 18 Strength qualify for exceptional
Strength? What about multi-classed characters? Double-classed
humans? | | Only characters who are Fighters or have the Fighter
class as one of their classes can qualify for an exceptional
strength rating. Furthermore, several races and genders of
races are by their nature unable to achieve an 18 Strength, and
thus do not qualify for the exceptional rating even if they are
Fighters. These types include all females except for humans
and half-orcs, plus male halflings. |
371. | DR132 | Dragon #132 | BATTLESYSTEM™: Can creatures such as elves or
treants charge in the woods? | | Only figures representing single creatures
or characters may charge in or into
the woods. |
372. | DR036 | Dragon #36 | If a party comes across a magic item, should
one tell them it is magic? Would it feel magical? | | Only tell the party that something is magic if they throw
a Detect Magic spell on it. The only other way to find out is to pick it up
and try it out. That might be dangerous, but that’s the way it goes
sometimes. Never, NEVER, tell them, “Oh gee, it feels like a +2
sword.” Make them work to find out what it is, never just give anything
away. |
373. | DR127 | Dragon #127 | BATTLESYSTEM: How do you determine if a unit is
completely in or just at the edge of a
woods? Is the entire unit considered
to be at the edge if just one figure
touches the edge? | | Only the status of individual figures
matters when a unit is in or near a woods.
A figure is at the edge of a woods if any
portion of the figure touches the edge.
Otherwise, the figure is either completely
in or completely out of the woods. Thus, a
unit could be half-in and half-out of a
forest, with some figures on the edge. |
374. | DR129 | Dragon #129 | Can a character with infravision
use a mirror to look around a
corner? | | Only with great difficulty. Mirrors do
not reflect infrared light very well. Only
creatures who are very close can be seen
in the mirror, and only if there are no
other heat sources nearby. |
375. | DR129 | Dragon #129 | I remember an article in DRAGON
Magazine that said elves make the
best archers of any fantasy race.
Why, then, don’t elves get some sort
of bonus when firing bows in the
D&D game? | | Opinions expressed in the DRAGON
Magazine are not official unless labeled as
such. The author of the article you read
was fully entitled to express his opinion
about the quality of elven archers, but that
does not affect the D&D game, however.
The author was probably referring to the
AD&D® game, in which elves are quite
different from those in the D&D game.
The reason elves in the D&D game don’t
have a special ability with bows is game
balance. Elves in the D&D game already
have a lot of abilities, such as infravision,
immunity to ghoul paralysis, and the ability
to cast magic-user spells while wearing
armor. Elves can also fight almost as well
as fighters. This is quite enough to put
them on a par with the other character
classes. |
376. | DR031 | Dragon #31 | A couple of friends and I are planning on taking
over our DMs island. So far our plan is working. Unfortunately,
we have encountered some problems. What we want to know
is how to spawn orcs? We need an army at the moment. | | Orcs are mammals and therefore do not spawn. You will
have to find some other way to raise your army. |
377. | DR121 | Dragon #121 | Oriental Adventures : Do Oriental characters get experience
for monetary treasure? | | Oriental characters do get experience
for monetary treasure, at the rate of 1 xp
per 2 taels. |
378. | DR122 | Dragon #122 | Oriental Adventures : What are the movement rates for
Oriental watercraft? What are the
movement rates for Oriental land
vehicles? | | Oriental watercraft have the same
speeds as their western counterparts (see
the Wilderness Survival Guide, page 44,
Table 25). The same holds true for land
vehicles — when they are available.
Wheeled vehicles were rare in most of the
ancient and medieval Far East and virtually
nonexistent in Japan until the modern
era arrived. |
379. | DR076 | Dragon #76 | In the old Giants in the Earth column, some of the heroes
were given a percentile score for every ability of 18, even those
characteristics like intelligence and wisdom that have no percentile
score given to them in the AD&D rules. Why was this done? | | Originally such 18-percentile scores were given as a basis for
comparison; so many of the heroes and heroines in that column
had ability scores of 18 that it was thought there should be some
way to further differentiate between (for instance) two characters
who both have 18 intelligence. Such percentile values can be easily
disregarded, since they have no function in the AD&D rules. |
