480. | DR043 | Dragon #43 | As listed in the Monster Manual, the larva and
the su-monster have incomplete alignments. What are they
supposed to be? | | The larva’s alignment is neutral evil, and the su-monster
should be chaotic neutral. |
481. | DR033 | Dragon #33 | What would happen if you hit a Lich with a
Rod of Resurrection? | | The Lich would have to make a system shock roll if he
is 120 years old or younger. If he is older than 120, then it would have
no effect. However, if he is young enough and makes his system shock
roll, he is resurrected, and you now have a mad, very high-level, evil
Magic-User facing you. Either way, you have your hands full. Remember,
the Lich loses all of his Lich abilities if resurrected. |
482. | DR129 | Dragon #129 | What is the best saving throw a
character can have? | | The lowest possible saving throw is a 2.
No matter how high a character’s level and
how many magical protections he has, a
roll of 1 always fails a save. There is no
best saving throw - just a successful one. |
483. | DR117 | Dragon #117 | The illusionist spell phantom
steed is listed as having a material
component, but the component is
not identified in the spell description.
What should it be? | | The material component for phantom
steed is a small silver horseshoe. |
484. | DR134 | Dragon #134 | D&D: The rules say that a bag of holding
can hold an item up to 10' long. Is
this right, or should this be 10"?
Also, is there a rule against placing
one bag of holding inside another? | | The measurements for a bag of holding
are in feet; bags of holding are very big
inside. There is no official rule against
putting a bag of holding inside another,
but it is reasonable to assume that the
extra-dimensional space contained in one
bag will not fit inside another. |
485. | DR134 | Dragon #134 | D&D: The rules say that if a victim of a
medusa's gaze makes his Saving
Throw vs. Turn to Stone, the medusa
will petrify itself. Is this correct?
If so, how is it possible? Are the
snakes on a medusa's head poisonous? | | The medusa's description in the Basic Set
is missing text in the Basic Set Dungeon
Masters Rulebook, page 34. When a victim
makes a Saving Throw vs. Turn to Stone,
there is no other effect. The only time a
medusa can petrify herself is when she
sees her reflection in a mirror. The medusa
gets a Saving Throw vs. Turn to Stone
against the reflected gaze. And a medusa's
snakes are poisonous. |
486. | DR120 | Dragon #120 | D&D® Companion Set : The War Machine gives a combat
result modifier for a force that is
immune to enemy attacks. Wouldnt
such a force simply win? | | The modifier is + 150, enough to win in
many (if not most) cases. You still have to
go through the computation, however, in
order to determine casualties and fatigue.
Also, there is usually some way for the
opponents to harm the force. Lycanthropes,
for example, are not immune to
fire. It is also possible to defeat a force
purely through positioning or maneuvering.
A horde of lycanthropes might not be
able to take a castle, for example. |
487. | DR121 | Dragon #121 | Oriental Adventures : Does the monk weapon damage
bonus also apply to missile weapons
or martial arts? | | The monk damage bonus of 1 hp per
two levels applies to both missile and
melee weapons, provided that the monk is
proficient with the weapon used. This
bonus does not apply to martial arts. Use
the Additional Martial Damage column of
table 21 (Oriental Adventures, page 18) for
martial arts damage bonuses. |
488. | DR032 | Dragon #32 | What kind of monster is on the cover of the
DUNGEON MASTERS GUIDE? What are its hit dice, armor
class, and so forth? | | The monster is an Efreeti and can be found in the Monster
Manual. |
489. | DR047 | Dragon #47 | The Speak with Animals
spell allows communication only with
“basically normal, non-fantastic creatures
such as apes, bears, cats, dogs,
elephants and so on.” (Players Handbook,
page 46) Does this mean that anything
in the Monster Manual cannot be
spoken to? | | The Monster Manual includes
many examples of “non-fantastic creatures.”
Generally, they include all monsters
whose AD&D™ attributes correspond
to the abilities and characteristics
of the actual animals, and who do not
have any magical or unnatural abilities
— such as (to name just a few) elephant,
jaguar, herd animals, flightless birds,
whales and camels. Generally, Speak
with Animals cannot be employed
against creatures which are altered versions
of “real” animals, such as the Giant
Skunk or Giant Beetles, because these
are not “basically normal” creatures with
regard to the natural animals of those
types. |
